Supervised Parenting Support Program

WHAT IS IT? This program provides supervision, support and education in situations where children are visiting with their parent or other family members and there are ongoing concerns about their ability to do so. Although supervised access provides observation, our program offers an additional element of education and coaching. Our supervision ensures that the parenting time is child centered and our supervisors provide support to the parents/family member discussing practical interventions to meet the needs of the children.

WHERE IS THIS HELPFUL? This program can transition from a supervised access centre where concerns remain about appropriate parenting. It can also support families where there has been a significant disruption in the child-parent relationship or where concerns exist as a result of addiction or mental health episodes. The program provides neutral and experienced “eyes” on the situation in more natural settings. Although we are not providing therapy, the supervisor will facilitate parenting time that is focused on rebuilding and reconnecting the relationship between parent and child, or other family member.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS? Consent from each of the parents and children over the age of six (6) is required. A plan for the visits has to be in place, whether agreed to by counsel, ordered by the court, or worked out in mediation prior to the start. The plan must identify how many visits will take place, at what frequency, for what duration, in which locations and what will happen at the conclusion of the time, i.e. a settlement meeting, court event or attendance at mediation. The supervisor will have a brief meeting with each parent prior to starting services.

THIS IS AN OPEN SERVICE. The information gathered and discussed, and the final written report can be used in a court or arbitration process.

WHAT SHOULD THE PARENTS TELL THE CHILDREN? We ask that parents explain to children that they are working out how best for each of the parents to spend time with them and that a helpful person will be at the visit and they are free to talk to that person if they need to do so.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE VISITS ARE COMPLETE? If mediation has been arranged, the information will be shared verbally at that session to assist in working through a resolution of next steps. A report will be prepared if settlement is not achieved. If mediation is not scheduled, the report will be provided at the conclusion of the specified time. The report will specify how the parenting time went and what, if any suggestions were given and acted upon.

WHAT ARE THE CREDENTIALS OF THE SUPERVISORS? Our supervisors are registered social workers with their MSW. They have been thoroughly screened through their references, and all have a current vulnerable person’s police check. They bring experience in working with families and children who are experiencing difficulties either due to mental health or developmental problems and/or in situations where the family conflict is significant.

WHAT IS THE FEE? The hourly rate is $150 with a one time administration fee of $250. Mileage will be charged if service is outside the City of Windsor.
